Interface types of LCD panels?

LCD interface types are very rich, the most commonly used interfaces are mainly RGB, MCU, LVDS, MIPI interface. Today, we briefly introduce the structure principle of these LCD interfaces.

Interface types of LCD panels?

1、RGB interface

The RGB interface of LCD is a colorful combination of three color channels: red (R), green (G), and blue (B), and the RGB represents the colors of red, green, and blue. Therefore, the RGB interface of LCD is the video interface with three primary colors input. Usually a color channel is represented by 8 bits, i.e. each color channel is worth 0~255, usually called RGB888/RGB24. The three color channels can combine about 1678(256×256×256) million colors in total, abbreviated as 16 million colors or 10 million colors, also called 24-bit colors. In actual use, besides RGB888/RGB24, there are also RGB555, RGB565, RGB32, RGB666, etc.

2、MCU interface

The MCU interface of LCD is mainly for the field of microcontroller. The MCU interface standard is the 8080 bus standard proposed by Intel, so in many documents I80 is used to refer to the MCU interface screen. MCU interface mode is divided into 8080 mode and 6800 mode, the main difference is the timing. Data bit transfer has 8 bits, 16 bits, 18 bits, 24 bits. Connections are divided into: CS/RS/RD/WR/. The advantages are simple and convenient control, no need for clock and synchronization signal. The disadvantage is that it consumes GRAM, so it is difficult to do large screen, usually used in less than 4 inches. For the LCM of MCU interface, the internal chip is called LCD driver. The main function is to transform the data/command sent by the host into RGB data for each pixel and display it on the screen. This process does not require a point, line, or frame clock.

3、LVDS interface

LCD LVDS interface is Low Voltage Differential Signaling, which is a low-voltage differential signal technology interface. The LVDS output interface uses a very low voltage swing (about 350mV) to transmit data differentially on two PCB alignments or a pair of balanced cables, i.e., low-voltage differential signaling. The LVDS output interface allows the signal to be transmitted at a rate of several hundred Mbit/s on differential PCB lines or balanced cables, and low noise and low power consumption are achieved due to the low voltage and low current drive method.

4、MIPI interface

LCD MIPI interface is the abbreviation of Mobile Industry Processor Interface. MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface) is an open standard for mobile application processors initiated by the MIPI Alliance. mipi is a relatively new standard, and its specifications are constantly being revised and improved, the current more mature interface applications are DSI (Display Interface) and CSI (Camera Interface). CSI/DSI refers to its bearer for Camera or Display applications, respectively, both with complex protocol structures.

In the LCD selection and customization process, the use of what type of LCD interface, mainly based on the motherboard interface, through the software driver matching to light up the screen, so as to achieve the product display program.
